Ingredients You’ll Need, Substitutions & Notes

Please check the recipe card at the bottom of the post for quantities and instructions (scroll down).

You will need:

  • A spiral-sliced, fully cooked ham: The weight of the ham will depend on the number of people you will serve.A 5 lb ham would serve 10-12 people.
  • Fresh chopped pineapple and cranberries: These are optional, but I like to add them because it makes the ham look over the top.

For the Chipotle Glaze:

  • Chipotle peppers in adobo: You can find these in the international aisle of most grocery stores. Check out my Ultimate Guide to Cooking With Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce.
  • Pineapple juice: I use no-sugar-added.
  • Brown sugar: Light or dark brown sugar will work well for this recipe.
  • Maple syrup: You can substitute it for honey.
  • Tomato with chicken granulated bouillon: You can find these in the international aisle of most grocery stores.

Best Ham To Make Glazed Ham

To make a glazed ham, you need a fully cooked bone-in spiral sliced ham. I usually buy Smithfield Bone-In Spiral Quarter Ham. Make sure the ham you buy is not pre-glazed already.

How To Make Chipotle Glaze Ham

Step 1 – Make the Glaze:

  1. Blend the chipotle peppers with the pineapple juice in a small food processor or blender.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the pineapple-chipotle mixture, brown sugar, maple syrup Tomato with Chicken Granulated Bouillon. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Once the mixture has come to a boil, reduce the heat to low and cook until reduced and a bit thicker, about 15 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat and set aside until the ham is done to be glazed.

Step 2 – Cook The Precooked Ham

Place the ham on the baking sheet and tightly cover the ham with aluminum foil. Bake at 350°F for 60 – 90 minutes, or until the ham is heated, approximately 20 minutes per pound. After the ham is heated, you can start glazing it.

Step 3 – Glaze

Add the chopped pineapple and cranberries to the baking sheet, if using, and brush the glaze on the ham. Return the ham to the oven and bake uncovered until nice, glossy, and caramelized about 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 5 -10 minutes before carving. Serve warm with the remaining glaze.

Recipe Tips

Baste the ham with the glaze several times while baking to ensure the meat doesn’t dry out.

Make sure to cover the ham well with the glaze, including between the cuts.

Increase the heat during the last 10 minutes of cooking if you’d like to crisp the outer edges.

Allow rest 10 minutes before carving to keep it moist and juicy.

If you want, you can double the glaze quantities to have some extra to serve along with the ham.

Storing & Freezing Instructions

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for 2 months.

Reheat Glazed Ham Leftovers

Place the portion of ham you want to reheat in a skillet and add 1-2 teaspoons of water. Heat, covered, over low heat until warmed through. I do not recommend reheating the ham in the microwave because there is a big chance that it will dry out.

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for 2 months.

Reheat: Place the portion of ham you want to reheat in a skillet and add 1-2 teaspoons of water. Heat, covered, over low heat until warmed through. I do not recommend reheating the ham in the microwave because there is a big chance that it will dry out.

Chipotle pepper in adobo: chipotle in adobo adds a bit of spiciness and smokiness to the ham. Feel free to add just one for a very mild kick or as much as three for a more spicy ham. I usually add just one.

Tomato with Chicken Granulated Bouillon: This ingredient adds another layer of flavor to the ham, but it’s not available you can substitute it with chicken or vegetable bouillon.

  • Baste the ham with the glaze several times while baking to ensure the meat doesn’t dry out.
  • Make sure to cover the ham well with the glaze, including between the cuts.
  • Increase the heat during the last 10 minutes of cooking if you’d like to crisp the outer edges.

FAQs

Do you cook the ham before you glaze it? ›

The idea is to wait until the ham is almost fully heated, then add the glaze as one of the last steps. You don't want to add it too early or the sugars in the glaze could cause it to burn, and you don't want to add it too late or you won't get that caramelized coating.

What is in the glaze packet that comes with ham? ›

Glaze Packet Ingredients: Sugar, Gelatin, Fructose, Honey Powder (Honey, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Wheat Starch, Corn Syrup, Soy Flour, Soy Lecithin), Paprika, Dextrose, Natural Flavors, Spices.

What cut of meat is used for glazed ham? ›

Honey Glazed Ham Ingredients

Ham: I opted for a shank cut (the leg). The shank end is what most holiday hams are, so it's a good choice if you want a beautiful presentation. The meat tends to be fattier and it has one long bone, which makes carving easier.

What is the honey glaze made of on ham? ›

But desserts aren't the only option for this glaze. Use it to finish off a honey-baked ham for that last hit of honey sweetness. Making it is as simple as bringing just three ingredients to a simmer—honey, light brown sugar, and butter.

Should a glazed ham be covered when baking? ›

If you don't cover your ham while cooking it will quickly dry out. Instead: Put some aluminum foil over your ham while it's cooking. It is recommended that the ham is covered for at least half of the cooking process and only removed during the last half when you glaze it.

Is it best to glaze ham during cooking or at the end? ›

The glaze should not be applied until the final hour to 30 minutes, in order to avoid burning the sugars. What you're going to do with the glaze ingredients is just combine most of them into a paste, and then apply it to the ham. After that, the heat in your oven will take care of everything.

Can you eat the skin on a glazed ham? ›

So with all ham recipes the skin, and some of the fat, is removed before glazing and usually this is discarded. A thin layer of fat is left on the ham as this helps the glazing ingredients to stick to the ham and caramelize and crisp in the hot oven.

What is the point of glazing ham? ›

Cook's hint: To speed things up, you can score and stud the flesh 24 hours ahead of time then cover with the removed skin. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to glaze and cook. Cooking: As the ham is already cooked, the purpose of glazing is to add your own flavour notes and to caramelise the fat.

Does ham get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

Editor's Tip: For a fall-apart tender ham, let it cook longer; 10 to 12 hours on low. This method is perfect for families who prefer a more casual dinner of shredded hot ham and roll sandwiches.

Should ham come to room temp before baking? ›

While baking a show-stopping ham is simple and easy, be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to bring the ham to room temperature for an hour (for even heat distribution) as well as up to 2 1/2 hours to bake it long, low and slow, depending on your ham's size.

Why cook ham flat side down? ›

Cook it cut-side down: Place the ham cut-side down in your pan to prevent it from drying out while baking. Cover it while cooking: Help the meat retain moisture by covering the ham or pan with aluminum foil before putting it in the oven.

What is a substitute for orange juice in ham glaze? ›

If you don't have any OJ on hand or simply don't want to use it, you can replace it with orange concentrate or orange extract combined with water. If you have an allergy and don't want to use orange at all, you can always try replacing it with apple cider, pineapple juice, or even apple cider vinegar.

What can you use instead of honey in ham glaze? ›

If the honey you're replacing is in a sauce, a glaze or marinade for meat or vegetables, use maple syrup in its place. It'll act in much the same way, even if it changes the flavor of the dish a bit.

Why does Honey Baked Ham taste so good? ›

First, our Honey Baked Ham products start with a rigorous selection process, then the meat is smoked for up to 24 hours with our special blend of hardwood chips. The result is that every rich and flavorful bite, and every slice, is fall-apart-in-your-mouth perfect. There's something about that sweet, crunchy glaze.

Do I need to cook ham before baking? ›

Most hams are already smoked or baked, are "ready-to-eat" and labeled that way and don't necessarily need to be cooked, at least not for food safety reasons. I buy Kentucky Legend ham, glaze it and bake it, but I'll buy the same exact ham and have them slice it for lunch meat and it doesn't get cooked again that way.

Can you glaze a cold cooked ham? ›

If glazing a pre-cooked ham it will need to be served cold, but still makes a great ham for carving. Using a small knife, remove the skin from the ham, leaving about 1cm of fat. Score the fat in a diamond pattern and it's ready to glaze.

Should ham be at room temp before glazing? ›

Prep The Ham
