Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (1)

Hybrid-electric powertrains have become a large portion of today's consumer automobiles, and the luxury segments are no exception. By now, most luxury manufacturers have a hybrid option of some sort, and this seems likely to expand moving forward, as the transition away from internal combustion engines continues. We've compiled a list of the best luxury hybrid cars here.

2024 Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (3)

Price: $223,925

For decades, Bentley has crafted standout luxury cars, famous for superbly appointed cabins and supple rides. It’s no surprise that adding in a touch of silence by way of electric propulsion has done nothing but favors for the Flying Spur, even if it must be in small doses. The electric motor can propel the near three-ton beast more than 20 miles on a single charge, while the V-6—the lowest cylinder count from a Bentley sedan in over 60 years—waits in the wings to take over whenever prompted.

2024 BMW 330e

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (4)

Price: $46,595

The BMW 3-series has long been a favorite in the luxury sports sedan world, so it should be no surprise that the hybrid variant, the 330e, is likewise a standout. The electric and gasoline-powered components coexist flawlessly and can propel the plug-in Bimmer 22 or 20 miles—depending on your choice of rear- or all-wheel drive—on electrons alone. With a sub $50,000 entry price, it's an electrified luxe bargain.

2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (5)

Price: $73,495

The mid-size luxury SUV segment is highly competitive, and quite popular, too, even having numerous options equipped with some sort of hybridization. Toward the top of that category, you’ll find the BMW X5 xDrive50e. With plenty of power on tap, being on time to pick-up the in-laws from the airport is a breeze, and the available 3rd row means you can stash them out of earshot. If you’re lucky enough to actually enjoy their company, the X5 can travel over 30 miles on electric alone, giving you a quiet, comfortable space to discuss this year’s holidays.

4

2024 Mercedes-Benz S580e

Price: $128,900

Having been a showcase of new tech for decades, the newest S-Class continues to press on with that in mind. With an all-time great electric-only range of over 60 miles, the snazziest Benz cosplays an EV extraordinarily well around-town, then has an ICE engine for back-up power for long treks. And with the "hyperscreen" front infotainment display, where even the front passenger has their own touchscreen, it truly feels like a rolling technology show. Though if full on luxury doesn't suit your needs, Mercedes-AMG does offer a plug-in S-class with over 1000 lb-ft of torque in the S63.

2024 Porsche Cayenne e-Hybrid

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (7)

Price: $93,350

Even though Porsche is often regarded as a purist automaker, they’re no stranger to electrification. The first ever hybrid car was designed by Ferdinand Porsche in 1900, 115 years prior to the release of the Porsche 918, the wildest Stuttgart-built hybrid to date. That car may be out of production, but the Cayenne e-Hybrid can still be found on showroom floors. Standard adaptive dampers—or optional air suspension—mean a soft ride when you want comfort, or a firm ride when tackling a back road. And for the more rambunctious enthusiast, Porsche offers a Turbo e-Hybrid variant, with much more sporting intent. In either arena, the Cayenne excels.

6

2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (8)

Price: $73,195

Volvo may have been later to the plug-in game than most, but they wasted no time adding the technology to nearly every model in its lineup. And it's working, too, with plug-ins making up over 20-percent of Volvo sales through ten months of 2022. The XC90, the largest steed in the Swedish stable, expertly executes the luxury PHEV. Sporting some of the most comfortable seats in the game, a fresh Google-based infotainment system, and a substantial list of features, it’s a fantastic all-around companion.

Land Rover Range Rover P550e

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (9)

Price: $142,575

A long time staple in the luxury game, the Range Rover introduced a plug-in hybrid powertrain on this newest generation for the 2022 model. Now heading into 2024, Land Rover has tweaked this powertrain to the tune of a triple-digit horsepower increase, and the outgoing powertrain achieved 51 miles of electric range according to the EPA. Available only in the standard wheelbase form, the plug-in Range Rover can accommodate five adults, and is packed full of rich materials. They even offer a leather-free interior option for the cattle conscious.

8

2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (10)

Price: $59,195

Much like the larger XC90, Volvo’s compact offering is a great all-rounder. Featuring a similar plug-in hybrid powertrain, the XC60 Recharge is capable of 36 miles of electric range and 63 MPG combined. All passengers can ride in comfort, as all Volvo seats—available in an incredible wool—are endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association, an industry first, for their ergonomic design. And, if you’re in the need of some gusto, this Volvo has plenty of power, making passing maneuvers safe and effective.

2024 BMW XM

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (11)

Price: $159,995

A new model for 2023, the BMW XM is an M brand exclusive, following in the faint footsteps of its predecessor, the BMW M1. This time, the exclusive model is a plug-in hybrid, featuring a twin-turbocharged V-8 and an electric motor in place of the torque converter. Also unlike the M1, the XM is one of BMW’s nicest interiors to date. Leather, suede, and aluminum cover most surfaces, plentiful fiber-optic accent lighting accentuates the geometric shapes carved into the headliner, and throw pillows adorn the second row. It may not match the Starsky and Hutch exterior styling, but it’s pleasant all the same.

10

2024 Mercedes-AMG C63

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (12)

Price: $95,000 (est)

The introduction of the newest C63 has been a mixed bag. Gone is the superb V-8 that has held down the fort for years in the compact AMG, but with its exit brings a load of tech to the high-powered C-Class. This generation features F1 derived technology in an electric-turbocharger for its inline-four, along with a 201-hp electric motor in accompaniment for total output of 671-hp. The rumble may be missing, but propulsion is certainly not lacking, with a 60-mph time likely in the low 3 second range. While the C63 doesn’t have much for electric-only driving (about 6 miles), it has excess just about everywhere else.

2024 Volvo V60 Recharge

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (13)

Price: $72,445

Around these parts, we’re often found chanting something along the lines of “long live the wagon” as the SUV takes over the market. Thankfully, Volvo has us holding out hope for the future with the V60, though reports suggest Volvo wagons have only a couple years of glory left. For those that want a higher riding, rugged wagon, the plug-in V60 Recharge is sadly not available in Cross Country guise. Fear not, as buyers are spoiled for choice since Volvo offers this powertrain in SUVs as well. Though many of us prefer the lower center of gravity that this traditional wagon provides, making backroad driving much more exciting than one might think from a station wagon.

12

2024 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (14)

Price: $205,925

The Bentayga was the first hybridized SUV in the Bentley lineup, and it doesn't appear to be going away any time soon. Housing the same powertrain as the Flying Spur and equipped with a modestly sized battery, the hybrid Bentayga can travel over 20 electric miles and another 400 or so on gasoline. Over those 420 miles, passengers can sink into the plush seats and take in the well-appointed cabin. Add those items to its smooth ride and the Bentayga scores top marks in both long and short distance comfort.

2025 BMW 550e xDrive

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (15)

Price: $75,000 (est)

BMW’s newest 5-series has been designed alongside the i5, an all-electric variant of the mid-size sedan. Bridging the gap between internal combustion and full EV is the 550e, a plug-in hybrid featuring an inline-6 engine and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. The battery pack has over doubled in size compared to the previous generation car, allowing for upwards of 40 miles of driving range on electrons alone. For the average American, that just might be enough for an EV-only commute each day to and from work. However, the 550e is the only model on this list that you'll have to wait for, as it is set to debut for the 2025 model year.

2024 Lexus NX350h/NX450h+

Looking for the Best LuxuryHybridCars? We've Ranked Them from Top to Bottom. (16)

Price: $44,615

Brand new for the 2022 model year, the Lexus NX made massive improvements. An updated infotainment screen, cushy seats, and a well-appointed, high quality cabin now adequately fit the Lexus mantra. The NX350h is exclusively comfort focused and lacks gumption, however the NX450h+, featuring a powertrain from the Toyota RAV4 Prime, is deceptively quick with a charged battery. And 37 miles of EPA electric range is hardly something to scoff at.

Jacob Kurowicki

Road Warrior

Jacob Kurowicki’s love affair with cars doesn’t end at track weapons and posh land yachts, but rather extends to the dopey and eccentric. Pining for a Pontiac Sunfire GT as a child was the first indicator, but an ongoing desire for a Lamborghini LM-002 is the kicker. He luckily found a home in the Car and Driver testing team that allows him to further develop his love for the automotive world and the oddities that come with it.
