Usually, we add the special mix-ins like glitter and confetti while we are making out homemade slime, but this time I set everything out like a toppings bar for after the slime batches were made! It was so much fun.

Setting up a slime mix-ins bar is great for a party or group activity if you want to be able to pre-make the slime and have it ready for the kids to decorate.

Slime Science Information

What’s the science behind this gorgeous slime? The borate ions in the slime activator{sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid} mix with the PVA {polyvinyl-acetate} glue and form this cool, stretchy substance. This is called crosslinking!

The glue is a polymer made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules flow past one another, keeping the glue liquid.

The addition of water is important to this process. It helps the strands slide more easily and ooze!

When you add the borate ions to the mixture, it starts to connect these long strands. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and is thicker and rubberier like slime!
