The show took ordinary people and gave them celebrity makeovers worth thousands of dollars. Though it was soon subject to controversy after a woman named Deleese Williams's makeover was canceled. Williams applied as a contestant on the show. She and her family were interviewed for an episode in January 2004. When questioned about Deleese, her family spoke positively of her. Excited and proud that she'd been chosen to appear on the show.𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙥𝙨𝙮𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙨𝙩 "𝘿𝙧. 𝘼" 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙖 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘 𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖. They repeatedly encouraged the family to say negative things about Deleeses appearance. Their intention was to create a visual before and after. A contrast between the negative comments and their later reaction after Deleese's surgical cinderella transformation. Deleese was listening and her reaction to the comments was filmed as part of the intended episode. In January 2004, Williams spent two weeks visiting doctors’ offices, a film studio and a gym. But on the eve of her life-changing surgery, which was to include breaking and resetting her jaw, a producer went to her hotel room and told her that the makeover was canceled: Her lengthy recovery wouldn’t fit the show’s schedule, the producer said.After the surgery was canceled Deleese's sister Kellie suffered from guilt for making the negative comments. Kellie McGee died from an intentional drug overdose in May 2004. Deleese sued for emotional damages; the case was settled out of court.𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙏𝙑 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬𝙨.
